With the season in full swing, it’s time for golf’s ultimate test, the U.S. Open. Widely regarded as the toughest of the four majors on Tour, the U.S. Open offers the most challenging of setups the USGA can scheme up. This year’s venue is a first timer, LA Country Club in Los Angeles, California. Newly restored by Gil Hanse, The tournament will have a nice mix of really long par threes and really short par fours. Golfers and Caddies alike will be operating at the highest level in hopes to bring home the Tour’s most coveted trophy. Also on the line, is a very hefty payout for the player that rises above the rest come Sunday.

The Purse at the 2023 U.S. Open

The purse at this year’s U.S. Open is a record-high $20 million. For those of us closely watching the purses in the era of designated events, this does not come as a surprise. We’re now accustomed to seeing tournament prize money increase by as much as 25% for the big events this year, usually around the $20 million mark. This year’s pot is a 14% bump from the 2022 U.S. Open. This year’s winner was Wyndham Clark, of Boulder, Colorado, his first major. With this win, Wyndham took home the usual 18% of the overall pot, which amounts to a staggering $3.6 million.

How much does the winning caddie make at the U.S. Open?

The winning caddie at this year’s U.S. Open was John Ellis. With this win, Ellis earned himself a $360,000 payday. This is the standard 10% of winning we know caddies make on Tour. For additional perspective, this is about double the amount Dave Markle made caddying for Nick Taylor at last week’s RBC Canadian Open. Compared to the PGA Championship, though, it’s a 14% improvement compared to what the winning caddie brought home.

How much do caddies make at the 2023 U.S. Open?

The caddie payouts at the U.S. Open will vary significantly based on how players finish over the weekend. Since there’s $1.35 million in prize money available to the caddies that make the 36-hole cut, we can project caddie earnings using our traditional model for caddie payouts:  5% for placing outside the top 10, 7% for placing inside the top 10, and 10% for winning.

Here’s the prize money payout breakdown for how much caddies will make at the 2023 U.S. Open
