The 2022 U.S. Open is arguably the toughest of the four majors on the PGA Tour schedule. The USGA ensures that the course is set up in a way that it challenges every aspect of a player's game. This year, the Open will be held at a very historic venue, The Country Club at Brookline in Massachusetts. There have been many memorable moments at the Country Club at Brookline. From Francis Ouimet’s win with his 10-year-old caddie by his side, to the 1999 Ryder Cup, A lot of first-time events have taken place there. This year, there is another major moment to remember and it was announced before the first tee shot. I’m talking about the purse.

The total purse at the 2022 U.S. Open

The overall purse at the U.S. Open is now $17.5 million. This is a hefty improvement of $5 million compared to the purse at the 2021 Open. USGA CEO Mike Wahn made the announcement on Wednesday via Twitter. This is now the highest purse of the 4 majors so far this year. Both the Masters and the PGA Championship had a 15 million purse, which is 14% lower than the prize money being awarded at the Open. This announcement comes off the heels of the LIV golf controversy, where players are being offered significantly larger purses to play in the startup league. A win at this year’s Open is sure to alleviate some of the financial burden of traveling each week. This week’s winner, Matthew Fitzpatrick, is poised to take home a whopping $3.15 million.

How much does the winning caddie make at the 2022 U.S. Open?

The winning caddie at the U.S. Open is Billy Foster. With this win, Billy is expect to take home $315,600. This is a huge step up compared to the prize money Rory McIlroy’s caddie took home after the win at the RBC Canadian Open. This cut is the standard 10% of the prize money awarded to Fitzpatrick, which we already know to be $3.15 million. Foster's share accounts for  26% of prize money available to caddies that made the cut over the weekend.

Here’s the payout breakdown for the caddies at the 2022 US Open
